The Other Woman is a radio show that has a home on the UK’s Amazing Radio as an all-female new music playlist. Ruth Barnes presents the show and has enlisted music journalist Jude Rogers over the years to come on and wax lyrical about her favourite musical femmes. Piney Gir is a musician who has played many a session for The Other Woman and after the last one she said, ‘Hey! Why don’t we do a podcast?!’
So this is the result. Sick of being patronised by shows ‘for women’ that really don’t speak to any of us, we thought we’d do our own. Music, culture, what’s on, guests and Stef Schadenfreude stops by to give us her unique take on the all the showbiz trash she has to shovel for a living… for discerning women (and men too)…
The podcast is on location for Episode 14, we’ve decamped to the ’shabby chic’ confines of Ms Marmite Lover’s pantry - she’s Kerstin Rodgers, the tiny dynamo of a woman who was responsible for London’s first pop up supper club in her lounge. We eat marmite on Aga-fresh sourdough toast and talk food politics, guerrilla eating, chubby-chasers and more. 18 year old Sienna Rodgers joins the chat too, aspiring blogger, politician and feminist that she is. Journalist Jude Rogers bring us a Lost Dame in the shape of Clara Rockmore, the original theremin muse and master - Piney Gir knows who she is but if like me, you’re in the dark, have a listen and you’ll learn something! Julia Muth is the lead singer and guitarist from rockers The Sharp Tongues who’re quietly making their mark on the London live circuit. We talk gold guitars, dating your bandmates and ditching Ontario for London - it was a good move. Join us and don’t forget you can subscribe to us in iTunes!
Our second podcast of 2012 and we’re thrilled to welcome Amy Lamé. Amy is a performer, radio and TV presenter, fellow podcaster (check out Homolab) feminist and former Mayoress of Camden…. amongst about a million other things, including co-founder of one of London’s foremost gay club nights Duckie. We talk: 20 years in London for this New Jersey girl, founding Duckie, gay politics in the media and general misogyny in gay culture PLUS fat politics and how you can support fat people without being fat! It’s a state of mind, as Amy says: ‘Fat people aren’t going anywhere!’ We also chat about Amy’s new one woman show, Unhappy Birthday, which you can see more info about here. One woman’s obsession with Morrissey and having a birthday on the crappest day of the year: 3 January! Urgh! We also have a Lost Dame from journalist Jude Rogers in the shape of Kim Wilde and Stef Schadenfreude gets her teeth into the Brits and the Oscars… tasty! Ruth Barnes and Piney Gir convene in PG’s wee flat in north London to string it all together. Magic! Don’t forget to like us on Facebook and subscribe to us in iTunes if you will!
We kick off the New Year with a discussion about women in media - and just how horrendously underrepresented we are. Based on Kira Cochrane’s research for The Guardian which was published at the end of year, we went straight to the horses mouth and invited Kira to the Betsey Trotwood pub in east London to break it all down. It’s doom and gloom stats-wise BUT there is hope for women in radio especially with the launch of Sound Women in 2011. We catch up with journalist and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer who tells us why it needs to exist and what it aims to achieve. Then we have musical tips for 2012 from The Girls Are editor Annette Barlow and of course Stef Schadenfreude has a rant about all the showbiz trash that’s rocking her world. Join us and please subscribe in iTunes! Happy New Year!
In this edition the gals snuck into a fancy studio with our guests - music legend, indie champ and all round DUDE Tom Robinson and Piney Gir’s drummer and musician David Fisher. They were our choices as ‘Menimists’ which we thought we coined as a kind of fun way of saying they’re Better Feminists Than We Are… only to have Dave knock that on the head during the interview, turns out Menimists exist and aren’t very nice! Journalist Jude Rogers is at the table, along with musician Piney Gir and our vodka swigging showbiz expert Stef Schadenfreude… Our discussion with Tom and Dave looks at Feminism from a male perspective, oh and Tinkerbell gets it .
In this bumper edition Ruth Barnes and Piney Gir come live and direct from a tiny flat in east London - bringing you an update on Piney Gir’s new album which is out in October AND a sneak preview of new tracks. Piney Gir went to LA to record with The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Rob Campanella which is why we’ve been outta action for a while - oh and also because Ruth got a proper job, sigh. We also have our Bride To Be in the shape of the brilliant Psapp’s Galia Durant and a chat with awesome DIY muso Tune-Yards on her new album Who Kill out now on 4AD. Action-packed! You’ll next hear from us from The Big Chill Festival - woooo hoooo!
In this edition we are joined by the one-woman music-making machine that is Laura Bettinson, she records as Dimbleby & Capper and is building a fashion/design/vintage empire to boot! Her single Let You Go is out on 21 March and we pick her brains about the new wave of young women music producers, playing Glastonbury and having hair the exact colour of a peach… We are also joined by Jude Rogers who celebrates Lost musical Dame Colleen, George Terry goes through the best of the trashy TV listings as our Guilty Pleasure and Piney Gir fills us in on going to LA and her country-girl all-dayer at The Lexington on 20 March. Good times! Don’t forget to download in iTunes, subscribe, rate and all that lovely stuff.
In this edition the lovely Jude Rogers is back in the ’studio’ with Ruth Barnes and Piney Gir, to chat to our pick of London’s hip cultural ladies! The ’studio’ in this case is The Horatia pub on Holloway Road, which is a fine establishment on an otherwise quite grotty road - with comedy nights, open mic evenings and a weekly Sunday market. We invited Manu from Mishaped Pearls to join us, the stunning voice from the classical/folk crossover outfit - listen to hear their jaw-dropping version of Neil Young’s Sugar Mountain. We also check in with young filmmaker Nadia Attia who also co-curates Midnight Movies, hear her explain WHY it’s important to watch movies in the dead of night. Also Colleen Murphy AKA DJ Cosmo and the brains behind Classic Album Sundays joins us to talk through why listening to a whole album in full, no phones, no loo breaks, no talking… is the ONLY way to appreciate those classic albums in your collection. We’d love it if you’d follow this link to find us in iTunes, rate us and subscribe!

We also catch up with Stef Schadenfreude our celebrity gossip newshound with a chip on her shoulder… and our Girl About Town is Hatty Ashdown who runs the Positively Tuesday, a comedy night at Positively 4th Street in Euston. Not the usual girlie sh*t! In this new year’s edition recorded at The Betsey Trotwood pub in east London, we catch up with Alice Gun, the spooky singer-songwriter who unleashes her debut album on the world on March 1st on Ambiguous Records. We also catch up our showbiz newshound Stef Schadenfreude who assuages our Guilty Pleasures with a look at the showbiz week.
