New Noise

Since 2006 Jon Hillcock’s New Noise new music radio programme has evolved from a podcast into a radio show (on Xfm and NME Radio), to a mailout, and now into a fully downloadable free weekly pod/cloud/sound/music/noise-cast.

I type while sat in the corner of the Dome in Brighton shortly before taking part in an 'in conversation' interview session with Xfm's John Kennedy at The Great Escape.  It's a small window within which I'm trying to upload this podcast, which I recorded at home yesterday morning and edited in a hotel room last night.  After I'm finished with the JK interview I'm jumping on a train to Manchester to cover Nemone on BBC 6 Music at 7am tomorrow.

So what I'm saying is, I'm short on time and can't scribble a natty blurb selling the music on this podcast.

Expect a man with a mower, an apology, and 10 quite brilliant pieces of music. But then I suppose I would say that.

Uploading a podcast towards the end of a Friday feels slightly like turning up at a party with cold beer minutes after everyone else has left for a club.

This one takes in an astounding new remix by Laurel Halo - who twists Kuedo's upcoming single into a composition that sounds like nothing else I've ever heard - and new music from old New Noise favourites Doldrums, Stealing Sheep and Hookworms.  New Zealand's Opossum and Bristol's Empty Pools offer first tastes of long players expected to arrive this summer, and there are songs related to Record Store Day purchases and also the inaugural Liverpool GIT Award, which is being presented tonight, quite possibly as I type.

I'm now going to have a cold beer.

New Noise - 17.04.12 - Record Store Day 2012 Special
17 Apr 2012. Last updated: 23:15PM

The fifth annual Record Store Day takes place this Saturday 21st April. To mark the occasion I invited the UK representative and Rough Trade East boss Spencer Hickman to record a New Noise podcast special.

Musically - along with a few of Spencer's favourites - there's a chance to hear some of the most sought after releases of this year's event: namely a split 7" which, on either side, features Mastodon covering Feist and vice versa; a piece of punk rock history from The Dead Boys; the first new PIL song for over 20 years; new Beach House and an unreleased Top of the Pops recording of David Bowie's 'Starman'.

In the interview Spencer and I discuss the plans, logistics and limited releases of RSD '12, and the possibility that the event may have even become too big and commercial for its own good.  We also cover the current state of independent record shopping and vinyl sales in the UK, especially in light of the decline of HMV, and I finally get the chance to ask why it is that Rough Trade is so blimmin' expensive.

It's been a while so I thought I would make a longer podcast and split it into two halves.  Twenty songs I can't stop listening to.

This is Side A, side B (containing another 10 songs) should be next to it on iTunes.

Hurry up and listen because I've already recorded the next one too. It's a Record Store Day 2012 special and features a few of the exclusive releases that'll be on sale for that one day only, wrapped around an interview with Rough Trade East boss and UK RSD rep Spencer Hickman. It'll be online on Tuesday 17th.

This podcast contains the following: three covers, a hip hop homage, an assault on the concept of pop music as a commodity, a track from a major label debut by an obtuse punk outfit, a belated nod to one of February's finest albums, a late replacement, two different songs produced by Rory Bratwell and the voice of a man in search of band.

Feedback, hints, tips, righteous anger to @jonhillcock / ilikenewnoise@gmail.com if you please.

There’s also a very good chance a few of these songs might appear on the radio this weekend too as I'm covering for Nemone on BBC Radio 6 Music on Saturday and Sunday morning from 7-10am.  We've just put the finishing touches to the rest of the playlist and, if I might say so myself, it's looking pretty tasty.

As ever your ears are appreciated.

This week, by chance rather than intention, I appear to have made a podcast littered with technical proficiency*.

Before you run, this doesn’t mean an hour of finger-tap widdle hell from Vai, or a series of thumb funk numbers courtesy of Caron.

This New Noise goes out to Che, Getz, Dilla, Stanier, Reinhardt, Stetson, Coxon, Shepherd, Burton, Boon and, especially, Reimer:  heroes who found the soul in skill.

The first New Noise podcast of 2012 gathers up some of the songs I've been listening to relentlessly over the past month or so (the tracks from the Bathetic Records Expressway compilation, Sinkane, Hospitality, Altarboy, Amateur Best, Coolrunnings and Way Yes) alongside a few of the best things I’ve discovered within the past week (Constant Mongrel, Schoolboy Q, Cross Record).

Originally I'd decided to give over 100% of the podcast to flagging up the songs I'd been enjoying over Christmas and January – principally all the new stuff I'd played on the 6music shows (the main reason for the absence of a new New Noise) – but while putting it together last Friday I couldn't help feeling that it needed a few fresh bits too.

So once you've had a listen, head over to http://newnoise.tumblr.com and you'll find another list of all the other songs I played on the radio but didn't have space to include on the podcast, complete with links.

Thanks for listening.  See you next week.

Honestly.

This is a turbo podcast.  I started compiling it at 8am this morning and managed to get it recorded, edited and uploaded etc within 3 hours - a new personal best.  I'm most likely now listening to these songs (loudly) on repeat while bombing down the M4 to Minehead for ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas.

Obviously, then, you'll find included a few of the many, many things I'm excited to see at Butlins over the weekend (namely Hot Snakes, Caribou, Roll The Dice and Thank You), along with other new stuff, such as the glorious return of AU, a short sharp/daft shock from new Sub Pop project Full Toilet, disturbingly special audio chocolate from Zack Christ, Hookworms (swiped from an excellent new free Gringo Records sampler), and the very welcome arrival of fresh Royalty.

There's also something brand new from New Noise favourites Breathe Out – a new aa-side made in aid of Shelter. Spend spare pence in the name of charity if you can.

New Noise: 9th December 2011

1. AU 'Solid Gold' (Leaf) single out 9th Jan, from album 'Both Lights' out in March

2. Hot Snakes 'Automatic Midnight (John Peel session version, tx November 18, 2004)' from 'Peel Sessions' 7" (2005)

3. Zack Christ 'Steadybeat Holidays (Old Beat)' [via Soundcloud]

4. Thank You '1-2-3 Bad' (Thrill Jockey) from album 'Golden Worry' out now

5. Royalty 'Cookie Dough' (Five Easy Pieces) from 'Purple Nights' EP out now

6. Hookworms 'Teen Dreams'  (Gringo Records/Faux Discx) from ltd. 'Hookworms' 12" EP out now, also from free Gringo Records sampler

7. Breathe Out 'White Chalk Cross' (via Bandcamp) part of aa-side download single out now, all proceeds to Shelter

8. Junior Boys 'You'll' Improve Me (Caribou Remix)' (Domino) from 12" single out now

9. Full Toilet 'Keys, Wallet, Phone, Gun' (Sub Pop) from album 'Full Toilet' out now

10. Roll The Dice 'See You Monday' (Leaf) from album 'In Dust' out now
